چکیده

P hysicists have long wondered whether and how isolated quantum systems thermalize—questions that are relevant to systems as diverse as ultracold atomic gases and black holes. Recent theoretical and experimental advances are bringing fresh insight into this line of inquiry. At one extreme, researchers have shown that disorder can fully arrest thermalization in certain isolated many-body quantum systems [1]. At the other extreme, surprising results from the field of quantum gravity have established that black holes are, in some sense, the fastest thermalizers in nature [2–4]. A common thread running through these developments is an emerging focus on the dynamics of quantum information, in which thermalization is associated with “scrambling,” or the loss of accessible information. Two groups, one in China [5] and one in the US [6], have taken a step towards tracking this scrambling of information in systems of quantum spins.

Seeing an unfamiliar face in rotational motion does not aid identity discrimination across viewpoints

Discriminating the identity of static face views is viewpoint-dependent (Lee, Matsumiya, & Wilson, 2006), yet the benefit of facial motion on improving cross-view discrimination remains unclear. We investigate here, whether seeing a face rotating in a single direction reduces the viewpoint dependence of neighboring views, in particular, along the trajectory of that motion direction. Results ind...

Selection of Spatial Reference Directions Prior to Seeing Objects

Three experiments examined the temporal characteristics in selection of a spatial reference direction. Participants learned a layout of objects presented sequentially in a random order. An array of disks with a symmetric axis different from participants’ learning viewpoint was presented before, during, or after learning objects’ locations. The results showed that the symmetric axis determined s...

Spins in few-electron quantum dots

The canonical example of a quantum-mechanical two-level system is spin. The simplest picture of spin is a magnetic moment pointing up or down. The full quantum properties of spin become apparent in phenomena such as superpositions of spin states, entanglement among spins, and quantum measurements. Many of these phenomena have been observed in experiments performed on ensembles of particles with...

Simulated viewpoint jitter shakes sensory conflict accounts of vection.

Sensory conflict has been used to explain the way we perceive and control our self-motion, as well as the aetiology of motion sickness. However, recent research on simulated viewpoint jitter provides a strong challenge to one core prediction of these theories -- that increasing sensory conflict should always impair visually induced illusions of self-motion (known as vection). These studies show...

Stimulus Set Meaningfulness and Neurophysiological Differentiation: A Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study

A meaningful set of stimuli, such as a sequence of frames from a movie, triggers a set of different experiences. By contrast, a meaningless set of stimuli, such as a sequence of 'TV noise' frames, triggers always the same experience--of seeing 'TV noise'--even though the stimuli themselves are as different from each other as the movie frames. We reasoned that the differentiation of cortical res...
